Embedded Systems Design

This recent design is a process controller using a 32-bit Atmel ARM7 CPU with USB, serial, two relays, and several bits of parallel I/O. Embedded design is multi-displinary requiring hardware and software experience along with some knowledge of manufacturing. Commercial and open source real-time operating systems, TCP/IP networking, and serial buses such as I2C and SPI round out the mix. Every design is different and there is always a new protocol or a new chip. Cost competes with performance, functionality, packaging, power, and heat dissipation. It's a different world from the commodity PC business, in which software can always expect a faster CPU or more memory.
